SEASON ONE, IN BRIEF

Independent law is approaching the question it has avoided for a century: what exactly does the billable hour buy? Drafting is being automated, clients are demanding fixed fees, and the best young lawyers are choosing employers their seniors have never heard of.

Season One puts the same questions to ten founders of Britain's independent law firms, on the record: what they'd defend, what they'd change, and what clients will still pay for.

FROM THE SEASON'S QUESTIONS
“What does the billable hour buy in 2030?”
“If the drafting is free, what is the client paying for?”
“Would you advise your own children to join a law firm?”
EACH EPISODE, ONE QUESTION
Every episode puts a single question to all ten chairs and sets the answers side by side. Ten takes, one question, properly made.
BETWEEN THE QUESTIONS
Quick-fire rounds, the stories behind each firm, and questions sent in by the industry run through the season.
HOW THE SEASON ENDS
The season closes with all ten at one table, the portrait of the year, and the industry in writing: the Annual Report.
WHERE THE SERIES STANDS

Announced for 2027. Convening opens late 2026.

The Legal Ten follows The Executive Search Ten and The Wealth Management Ten as the third Ten Chairs series. The ten chairs are drawn one to a practice, from disputes to private client, and held by invitation: when convening opens we research the field, identify the people who lead each practice, and extend invitations one at a time.

If you lead an independent firm and believe a chair should be yours, tell us now: conversations that start early tend to be the ones that end in a seat.
